grades 9-12The Competitive Edge (or Real Life 101) The senior high student is ready to make a greater commitment to the wider world, but needs a good grasp of the skills necessary to navigate it successfully. Learning to evaluate career choices, spend money, use credit wisely and plan post high school education options are high-interest activities for high school students. Bringing Home the Gold appeals to the growing sense of autonomy older teenagers feel as they begin to take responsibility for their own lives. The 22 lessons in the 9-12 document are divided into five theme areasthe economic way of thinking, earning an income, saving, spending and borrowing, and managing money. Most of the lessons are estimated to take one class period; some may take up to two class periods. The lessons in each theme area can be used sequentially; each can also be used alone. The Student Workouts include reading materials relating to the content of a lesson in addition to worksheets to promote active, reflective learning. An introductory section focuses on what is covered in the theme area. Major concepts of the theme are addressed, not through a descriptive narrative, but through Frequently Asked Questions. The Parents' Guide has activities that parents can do with their sons and daughters. The Parents' Guide includes content, worksheet activities, other activities, and resources. It is recommended that a guide be provided for each family. A letter to the parents from the teacher will help gain their cooperation. A reminder of when the parents should do a specific activity would be beneficial in developing this school/home educational partnership. Encourage this educational partnership by having students report either orally or in writing on the activities they do with their parents. High school students enjoy learning about personal finance because it involves making decisions about their lives. Generally, high school students have an excellent readiness to develop financial literacy because they are looking forward to living "on their own" in the near future. They want to know some strategies to use to make their income go as far as it can. Personal finance is an interdisciplinary area where language arts, computation, economics, finance, reasoning, and decision making are all brought together. The CD-ROM contains all of the print materials in PDF format for viewing, searching, and printing purposes, as well as three interactive activities which are based on the "workouts" in the print materials. You can demo a portion of the interactive activities that are contained on the CD-ROM right now. This is just a sample of the exciting hands-on activities that are contained on the CD-ROM. Sample activity - grades 9-12 Knowledgeable investing involves choosing among many alternatives. The first step is to learn the language of investing.
